Portuguese and Korean Recognized WIPO Languages

English to Korean Patent Translation Services

To get an international patent filed in accordance with the PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) procedures, the applicant must submit a translated copy of the patent contents to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) within 18 months in one of the official languages recognized under the treaty.

Prior to this week, there were 8 official WIPO languages: English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic.

As of Sep. 27, 2007, the WIPO now recognizes two additional official languages: Korean and Portuguese.

Thus, patent applications in Korean and in Portuguese are likely to increase, since the Korean-speaking and the Portuguese-speaking applicants will no longer need to spend time and resources on translations from Portuguese and on translations from Korean.
